I do not claim to be a dog trainer myself but I have spent the past seven years researching dog behavior issues and training, and finding the absolute best training resources available. I believe that the products featured on this site are the best of the best.

Whether you have a brand new puppy or an older dog, it's important that you take the time to train him correctly.

  1. Positive reinforcement is a must. Even though there are many theories on the way to train your dog, the majority of dog training experts acknowledge that positive reinforcement works best. Positive reinforcement involves rewarding your dog with verbal praise “good dog”, physical praise like a pat on the head and food rewards. It does not involve screaming at your dog, hitting or punishing him.

Positive reinforcement works due to the fact it creates a relationship of trust with your dog. Dogs are motivated by rewards especially food rewards.

  2. Consistency is really important. If you’re working with your dog on a particular skill or trick then attempt to train him at the same time each day. This helps your dog know what to expect. The majority of dogs thrive on structure and will perform and learn much faster if they know what is expected. If you’re training using food rewards, try and train your dog before mealtime so he is a little hungry and motivated.

  3. Have patience. Dogs often learn in waves. Sometimes they pick things up quickly then the next day it appears that you have to start again from the beginning. Be patient. Start each new trick with really small steps and be crystal clear about what you expect. Even with the smallest tricks like “sit” you should break it down into smaller steps.

  4. Use hand cues as well as verbal cues. Some dogs have an easier time comprehending and remembering hand signals than they do with verbal cues. Assign a hand signal to each trick or behavior you're training.

  5. Train in small increments. Dogs have short attention spans. Trying to train them for thirty minutes is not likely to work. They’re going to become frustrated and lose focus. Instead, keep training sessions to no more than ten minutes.

In the beginning, you may want to train for only a minute or two until your dog learns to look forward to training. Dogs can learn to dislike training. Keeping the training sessions short will help them learn to enjoy the process.

  6. Always end on a positive note. Learning a brand new trick is hard work. Conclude each training session, no matter how frustrating, on a positive note. Always give your dog a trick or behavior to perform that they have learned to perform and end with a food reward and lots of praise.

  7. Keep your dog healthy. Last but not least, one of the most important dog training secrets from the experts recommends feeding your dog a quality dog food, giving him sufficient fresh drinking water and making certain he gets sufficient sleep. A healthy dog is a happier dog and he will understand desired behaviors far more quickly.

Giving your dog the correct training is an extremely important part of responsible pet ownership. It should be required for all prospective dog owners. Of course, the main reason for training your dog is to maintain family harmony and to enhance your home life with the addition of your four-legged family friend.
