The Affenpinscher Dog

Originating in Germany, the Affenpinscher dog breed is known to have been in existence in the seventeenth century, making it one of the oldest of the toy breeds. It is believed to be the breed that brought about the development of the various smaller wire coated breeds throughout Europe, such as the Brussels Griffon and the Miniature Schnauzer.

The Affenpinscher is an enchanting little breed that has a unique personality and a stout and hardy physical appearance. Although small, these are very sturdy dogs. They have an almost monkey-like appearance, hence the prefix "affen", which is the German word for monkey, and "pinscher", German for terrier.

The coat of the Affenpinscher dog is dense, rough, harsh and about 1" in length on the shoulders and body. The coat is usually black, but they are also available in gray, silver, red, or black and tan. The Affenpinscher is 9 to 11 inches tall and weighs 7 to 9 pounds. Their average life span is 10-12 years.

Grooming this breed is a breeze. A great thing about grooming an Affenpinscher is that the shaggy, unkempt appearance is the look that you should be going for.
